A properly fitted motorcycle helmet can play a major role in the outcome of an accident, making it imperative you are aware how to properly measure your helmet size.

An ill-fitting motorcycle helmet will not protect you - if it is too loose, it will easily come off in a crash. The first step in determining what helmet size you are is figuring out your head size. We have outlined how you can do this, with 5 simple steps!

5 Steps to Properly Measure your Helmet Size

  1. Wrap a soft measuring tape around your head about a half-inch above your eyebrows, above your ears and around the back of your head at the largest point.  It is a good idea to have someone help you measure.
  2. Compare your head size with the specific motorcycle helmet manufacturer’s size to find a match.  Each manufacturer will have its own sizing charts for their particular helmets so you have to compare your helmet size to each brand’s sizing.
  3. Try the helmet on before buying it.  The helmet should sit squarely on your head with the helmet’s eye port just above your eyebrows.  A properly fitted helmet will not go on easily at first but it will loosen slightly as you break it in.
  4. If the helmet moves or your fingers slide easily between your head and the helmet, you’ll probably need a smaller size.  The helmet should fit snug around your head and face with no pressure points.
  5. You should determine your head shape because the shape is as important as the size and some manufacturers factor in head shapes when making their helmets.  Helmet shape contributes to overall comfort and safety.

Depending on usage, a motorcycle helmet’s life is good for about 3-5 years. Furthermore, it’s important to note that you should not buy a used helmet as it will have already pre-shaped to the previous owner’s head – leaving your head vulnerable if an accident were to occur.
