Planning a solo Motorcycle Tour, StreetRider Insurance, Ontario

1| Keep Emergency Contact Info Accessible

We all understand how dangerous the roads can be. That being said, make sure you keep your emergency contact information on you, should emergency responders require it. It should include a contact list with phone numbers as well as any current medications and allergies.  The best place to keep this information is in a little pouch attached to your motorcycle helmet.

2 | Share Your Tour Itinerary

It’s always important to advise family/friends where you will be touring each day and when you plan to check in.  Sharing your itinerary helps to prevent worrying.

3 | Examine Your Motorcycle Regularly

It’s very important to be aware of any mechanical issues your motorcycle might be experiencing before you leave on your tour.  Inspecting your motorcycle regularly throughout your trip will help keep you safe!

4 | Wear Earplugs

Earplugs are an essential accessory to wear riding a motorcycle. They protect your ears from loud noises and did you know they can significantly reduce fatigue?! Helmets can be noisy, especially when riding at higher speeds and on motorcycles without big windscreens. Your brain tries hard to process the noise from the wind and to determine if there is anything important it needs to hear – this causes constant mental strain.

5 | Ride at Appropriate Times

When riding a motorcycle, it’s a good idea to start early and finish early.  You should be off your bike before dusk because the changing light makes it harder for drivers to see you and it’s harder for you to see road hazards.  Plan your tour accordingly!

6 | Don’t Over Pack

Only pack the essentials when you are touring.  Some important things to include are your phone, charger, wallet, maps, flashlight, emergency kit, a microfiber towel to clean your visors and windscreens. Traveling light frees up more time because it takes less time to load and unload your motorcycle.

7 | Eat and Drink Smart

When touring be sure you don’t overeat and have your biggest meal when you have finished riding.  It’s imperative that you stay hydrated, as dehydration causes fatigue.  If you wait to take a drink when you feel thirsty, you’re already too late.

8 | Use Social Media

Using social media can be a fun way for you to document your motorcycle tour! In addition, it’s a great way to share your journey with family and friends, they will be able to track your travels and know you are safe!
