Should You Warm Up Your Motorcycle Before You Ride This Winter? StreetRider Insurance, Ontario

Many riders aren’t fully aware of how to keep their motorcycles in good shape during the fall and winter seasons. By following the steps below on how to properly warm up your motorcycle, you will help it last longer.

What Could Happen Without a Warm Up?

If you don’t warm up your motorcycle, the oil will be sitting at the bottom of the pan at a cold temperature, which doesn’t flow easily. This can cause damage to your engine and the inside of the engine cylinders of your motorcycle. If you end up riding your motorcycle without a warm up once or twice, you shouldn’t notice any damage, but if you continue to do this often, you will notice your motorcycle’s engine begin to fail much earlier than it should.

How to Properly Warm Up Your Motorcycle

1. Let Motorcycle Idle Upright

The first step to a proper warm up for your motorcycle is to let the engine run while it is standing upright. Your motorcycle shouldn’t be on your kickstand during its warm up.

2. Ensure Good Response

You want to ensure your motorcycle responds well to throttle input before starting your ride. If it doesn’t stall, you are experiencing a good response.

3. Ride Easy

One of the most important steps to ensuring you are giving your motorcycle a proper warm up before a ride is to start your ride off slowly. Give your motorcycle some time on the road to warmup too and wait to accelerate heavy until you’ve already been riding and cruising for a while.

By following these warm up tips, you will ensure you are keeping your motorcycle in good condition throughout all the seasons of the year, especially in the winter months.
